Lighthouses and More Featured in National Historic Preservation Month

May is the month when the entire nation celebrates history, architecture, and culture of the past. Communities share significant historic sites and buildings that tell the stories of the past, and celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and towns.

We are fortunate that Friday Harbor was one of the few towns to escape devastating fires in the 1800s, which is why you’ll see so many businesses in town housed in charming old wooden buildings. But there is more to the history of the island than a few blocks of architecture, and the San Juan Historical Museum has a full line-up of events for you to learn about the history of this captivating island.

Saturday, May 12, 3:00 pm. Fish Tales with John Wade & friends. Hear fascinating tales of yore about the glory days of fishing in the San Juans. Learn about the people, the boats and the fishing methods used when salmon was king. Suggested donation $5, museum members no charge.

Saturday, May 19, 3:00 pm. Evergreen Lighthouses, Washington & Oregon, with noted author and lighthouse historian Elinor DeWire. A colorful armchair tour of the lighthouses of Washington and Oregon, past and present!

Travel up the coast from Cape Blanco to the Columbia River and Portland, then on to Cape Flattery and into the treacherous Strait of Juan de Fuca. Sail among the San Juans north to the tiny sentinel at nubby Point Roberts, then down the shore to Admiralty Inlet, Puget Sound, Seattle, and Olympia. Meet lightkeepers and their families, animal companions at lighthouses, even lighthouse ghosts. Hear true tales of shipwrecks, storms, fog, and unusual events. Learn about a bygone and cherished chapter of American history when human hands tended the lights along the Oregon and Washington shores.

Local lighthouse preservation groups will provide information about ongoing preservation efforts at Patos Island, Turn Point and Lime Kiln Lighthouses  Seating will be limited. Suggested donation $5, museum members no charge.

Saturday, May 26, 2012, 1:00-4:00 pm. Know  Your Island Walk. Meet Sandy Strehlou, Town of Friday Harbor Coordinator of Historic Preservation and Kevin Loftus, Director of San Juan Historical Museum.  Take Friday Harbor’s first-ever tour of Post War Architecture known as Recent Past Architecture; 1945-1960. Discover why these very familiar and often under-appreciated buildings are considered historic and important to our heritage. Tour ends with a private tour of the more distant past at the San Juan Historical Museum’s eight buildings, each with displays and exhibits depicting the unique history of San Juan Island. Free and open to the public.

San Juan Suite

Amenities: This is our ‘party’ suite – the perfect gathering place for extended families, couples traveling together, or groups enjoying a ”friends reunion.’   The San Juan Suite has plenty of comfortable common areas for visiting and catching up, but also offers lots of privacy for quiet moments alone.  This spacious (1650 sq. ft.) two and a half bedroom, two bath “home” is full of old world charm.  The San Juan Suite retains all the architectural features of this 1905 historic craftsman style house, yet has all the modern amenities and conveniences for a comfortable stay including hardwood floors, a formal dining room with chandelier, leaded glass built-ins, high ceilings, and a cozy remote controlled gas fireplace in the large family room. The family room even boasts a well-tuned piano for your enjoyment. There is a large, well-equipped eat-in kitchen perfect for preparing an evening meal,  enjoying some light fare, or savoring your scrumptious breakfast in the comfort and privacy of your suite.  Enjoy harbor views from the 35′ private deck or grill up some king salmon on your own barbecue.  There is a large shared hot tub a few steps from your private deck where you can relax and enjoy the star-filled night with filtered views of the town and the Port of Friday Harbor.

The San Juan suite sleeps from two to ten in comfort. Two of the bedrooms have a queen feather-top bed and there is one full-size feather-top bed on the sun porch.  There are a queen and full sleeper sofas in the living room.  This suite is accessible from ground level and features two baths – one with a tub/shower combination and the second with a walk-in shower. This is a pet-friendly suite.

Lopez Suite

Amenities: Watch the ferry and seaplanes come and go in the Port of Friday Harbor from this upper level suite. This spacious 2 bedroom/1 bath vacation retreat is ideal for 2 couples traveling together; Mom, Dad and the kids; or for a girls weekend away. Enjoy exquisite views of the harbor and the roof tops of town from these spacious accommodations. The suite boasts over 800 sq. ft. of living area with full kitchen, barbecue and viewing deck. The wrap around windows and sky lights create an expansive but yet cozy feel. The main bedroom doubles as a living room and has a queen feather-top bed and queen sleeper sofa. The second bedroom has a queen feather-top and two twin feather-top beds.

Friday Harbor Suite

Amenities: This penthouse studio suite is the ultimate in luxury and privacy. Located on the upper level of the Harrison House, this suite features vaulted ceilings, Brazilian cherry flooring, two flat screen televisions, DVD player and docking station, king feather-top bed, remote controlled gas fireplace, full kitchen, barbecue, hand tiled bath with waterfall showers in the dual vanity and walk-in shower. The suite has handcrafted cabinetry and built-ins, and enjoys filtered views of the Harbor and the roof tops of town from the deck. Melt away all your worries in your private two-person Hot Springs hot tub on your private deck. You might just never want to leave!

This roomy studio suite has a private bath with walk-in shower, a queen feather-top bed, and a full-size sleeper sofa.

Shaw Suite
