Tuck Into a New Novel Set in Friday Harbor!
Harrison House recently had the pleasure of hosting author L.A. Buday on one of her return trips to the island. She has certainly developed a love for our little corner of Washington, as she decided to set her debut novel on San Juan Island! A Fine Mess of Things would be an excellent choice for your local book club, as a holiday gift to your houseguests, or just to kick off your summer reading list when warmer temperatures return.
For the convenience of her readers, Buday has chosen to make the novel available electronically only. This also saves on price, as the current cost to download the full novel on Amazon.com is just $8.99, a fraction of what you’d pay for a new hardcover version!
In the novel, set in 1985 at the fictional Reef Net Inn, “a dysfunctional family gathers for a ‘video will’ following the death of the eldest daughter and amid strange events at the inn, are confronted with long-kept secrets and reconciling their ethical beliefs regarding family bonds, love, aging and death.”
I downloaded a free sample of the novel to my Kindle, and the story begins with the ending of a life. Readers are immediately taken with Laura, then shocked as she passes away. The following three chapters are short introductions to each of her remaining sister’s lives, set as they all depart to attend her funeral. Each of them is richly developed as a character in a refreshingly short number of pages – we are made to care about them all in different ways right off the bat. Unfortunately, that was where the free sample ended! I certainly wanted to read more.
You can too, by going to the book’s website and following the provided links to find a free sample.
“I am happy to report that A Fine Mess of Things is doing quite well and we hope residents of the San Juan Islands will download it and relate to the settings and story,” said Buday. “Many thanks for thinking of me and I want you to know that every trip to your beautiful island fills me with new inspiration for the next book.”
