Hospitality Vignettes with Susan

Canadian Thanksgiving

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Canadian Thanksgiving

Okay, okay. The secret is out… Susan is CANADIAN. And Canadians have a Thanksgiving all their own! Luckily she let the team join her in celebration this year. Here’s an inside look to what Canadian Thanksgiving looks like, Susan-style.

Falling Into Autumn

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Falling Into Autumn

Friday Harbor is taking Autumn by storm. Not only is our property embracing all things Fall, but so are our neighbors. In this week’s vlog, Susan will show some of what this festive town has to offer. But…..perhaps not in the way you’d expect.

We’re on Island Time

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: We’re on Island Time

You’ve heard it a million times. But what does being on “Island Time” actually mean? Is it really any different from your average day on the mainland? Yes, yes it is. Don’t believe us? See for yourself.

Call Me Definitely

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Call Me Definitely

There are tons of third party booking sites out there… But do they REALLY know the properties they’re selling you? Do they REALLY care about the name of your dog?

We do. And we’ll prove it.

Teach Me How to Ferry

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Teach Me How to Ferry

If you’ve been in our neck of the woods, you know the Washington State Ferry is a HUGE part of the San Juan experience! Check out this week’s vlog as Susan covers everything you need to know before embarking on the inter-island ferry run. Plus, tips on how to spend your time aboard!

Something many visitors don’t realize is that the Inter-Island Ferry Route is FREE to walk-on. Though we do recommend having a vehicle to conveniently peruse the neighboring islands, if you want an inexpensive day trip the Inter-Island ferry is perfect for you. You’ll be sure to get your steps in!

Goodbyes are Hard

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Farewell Nikki

Time sure does fly, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday Nikki became part of the family. But now, after an amazing year with us, she’s off to her next adventure! Tune in to this week’s Hospitality Vignette to watch Susan’s (attempt to say) goodbye.

A Day in the Life of an Innkeeper

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: A Day in the Life of an Innkeeper

Find out what Susan REALLY does as an innkeeper for the San Juan Island Inn Collection. There is a lot that goes on each day at a bed and breakfast inn. From cooking breakfast to plunging toilets, she can do it all!

Why Make Vlogs?

Written by Susan Miesch Published on September 7, 2017

Vlogs: A way to get a message across and have a blast doing so. I know you can write a blog and you can create a diary, but why not kick it up a notch and video tape your message? In a video, there is no need to concentrate on being grammatically correct. Heck! My English teacher would completely agree that I should stick to videos. Sometimes when I want to share a thought or show off a part of the San Juan Island Inn Collection, it just seems so much easier to “act it out”. You see, I might just be a closet performer. Okay okay, so maybe I’m not so closeted. I so enjoy making people smile in 2 minutes or less.

Ahaaaa, “Heeellllloooooo, Susan here from the San Juan Island Inn Collection, which includes the Tucker House Inn, Harrison House Suites and Coho Restaurant.” What a hoot!

Think about YouTube and what it does nowadays. Good grief! You can look everything up. Including how to change an inside washer on a kitchen sink faucet or how to clip your 25 year old cat’s toenails. So why can’t you send a creative message out that explains where you work and what you do? Or invite viewers to come and experience your place of work?

Boy, Times Have Changed

Marketing now is so much more fun and in my opinion. It is so interactive! There are so many ways to grab your audience’s attention and help them remember your message. I remember the good ole days when you watched a 30 second commercial with a snappy jingle and you would find yourself whistling that jingle for the next two weeks. Great! Now I’m dating myself. “I am stuck on band aid brand cause band aide stuck on me.” or “Oh I’d love to be an Oscar Meyer Wiener, that is what I truly like to be, cause if I were an Oscar Meyer Wiener, everyone would be in love with me.” Now, see how those jingles stick in your mind? Okay so this is directed for a specific generation I suppose. Anyways, I’ll continue on.

Humor, cute lyrics, and fun messages are more memorable. And to that I say, bring it on! It’s my vlog and I can do what I want with it. You’ll have to humor me though. I enjoy making my vlogs as quirky and weird as I am! By the way, you won’t hear a rapid disclaimer at the end of my vlogs letting you know that the more vlogs you watch, the worse the stitch in your belly may be. Or that it could lead to a deep and uncomfortable aching throughout your face cheeks and mouth. Phew! Thank goodness for that. But if that is a concern of yours, just know that all Hospitality Vignettes by Susan are doctor approved and medically harmless.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Okay so my editor is telling be to wrap this up and get back to the point now. So back to the collection vlogs I so very much enjoy doing. Why not? They are fun, I enjoy them, the message is relayed in a positive way, and they seem to be getting some traction. If that continues, so will I.

I guess it is time for me to sign off on this blog and prepare to shoot yet another vlog. Thinking of hitting the sky on a plane to share the amazing view of the islands or perhaps an in-depth conversation with San Juan Islands very own resident camel Mona. Good grief, so much to do in so little time.

Please keep watching so I can keep having fun! Oh, and come visit us at the San Juan Island Inn Collection and give me a big ol’ “hellllloooooooooooooo”!

Snapping Selfies at the San Juan Island Inn Collection

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Snapping Selfies

Susan attempted to be hip like the kids these days. She took selfie-ing to a whole new level. You be the judge, has she found her new calling? And is it still a selfie if there is another person in the photo?

Sneaking into the Garden

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: Sneaking into our Garden

With fresh vegetables LITERALLY at your fingertips, how could Susan resist? She snuck into the garden to snag some goodies. Chef Jessica might not have been too pleased with Susan, but it was so worth it.

The San Juan Island Brewing Company

Hospitality Vignettes with Susan: New Brewery in Friday Harbor

The San Juan Island Brewing Company is the new kid on the block! We had an amazing tour of the brewery the day before it opened. And, let’s just say, it’s got a lot goin’ on! We can’t wait to hang out here all summer long. They’ll soon get sick of us!
